Feline Miscellany

A mixed bag of items, not necessarily veterinary, or always entirely serious, but hopefully of interest, which I will update regularly.

Topical Tip

Sunburn--yes, even in Wales. Especially white and light coloured cats, and usually the bald area in front of the ears, and the ear-tips. And it's always the cat who shouldn't sunbathe who likes it the most, like my Siamese, Charlie. Use Petscreen SPF 23 daily. Beware--lesions are pre-cancerous .

I often see cats who are off their food, and it

always surprises me how many owners fail to warm their pets food. Cats sense of taste isn't brilliant, but their sense of smell is much better, so place the sachet of food in warm water for a few minutes before serving  - it enhances the aroma and is nearer the temperature at which they would eat prey. Also, remember cats have mouse sized stomachs  so give appropriately sized portions.

STOP PRESS

The best news this month has to be the approval of the first commercially available FIV vaccine by the USDA. Details of the new vaccine may be found on the manufacturer Fort Dodge's web-site. I see far more cases of FIV than FELV these days, testimony to the effectiveness of the vaccination programme. Initial reports suggest that 3 primary doses are required with an annual booster. I will inform clients when the vaccine becomes available in the UK.
